Is Spot Pet Insurance good?

Spot is a great option for anyone looking for a customizable, affordable pet insurance plan with top notch coverage.

Our favorite thing about Spot Pet Insurance is the wide range of maximum annual coverage options you can choose from. This makes it easy to customize a plan with the right coverage and monthly cost to fit your budget.

When reviewing Spot’s coverage, we were pleasantly surprised to find that it was the most inclusive of the 11 companies we compared. Dental disease, alternative therapies, and even exam fees are all included without any additional add-on policy.

Spot Pet Insurance plans and what they cover

Spot offers three types of plans for pet parents.

Let’s take a closer look at what these pet insurance plans cover.

Accident and illness coverage

This plan is the most comprehensive, as it covers vet bills related to a wide range of illnesses and injuries.

For example, if your dog develops a growth on its leg, your pet insurance will pay for an exam and other necessary services. If your vet wants to remove the growth, Spot may even pay for the surgery, anesthesia and pathology services needed to determine if it’s benign or malignant.

Spot accident and illness policy

  • Accidents like bite wounds, broken bones, torn ligaments & more
  • Illnesses like arthritis, allergies, UTIs, hyperthyroidism & more
  • Hereditary & congenital conditions like heart disease, eye disorders and hip dysplasia
  • Exams fees
  • Microchip implantation
  • Diagnosis and treatment of behavioral issues
  • Hospitalizations & surgery
  • Emergency care
  • X-rays & lab tests
  • Dental illnesses
  • Digestive illnesses
  • Infections
  • Swallowed objects & poisoning
  • Orthopedic
  • Cancer treatment
  • Virtual vet visits
  • Alternative therapies like acupuncture

Accident-only coverage

The accident-only plan reimburses you for vet bills associated with accidental injuries. Since it doesn’t cover any illnesses, this type of pet insurance costs less than a comprehensive plan.

Spot accident-only policy

  • Exam fees
  • Imaging (X-rays, MRI scans, CT scans)
  • Prescription medications
  • Hospitalization & IV fluids
  • Surgery
  • Medical supplies
  • Poison control consultation fees
  • Lab testing
  • Alternative therapies, including stem cell therapy
  • Tooth extractions

If your cat needs a tooth extraction due to severe gum disease, your accident-only plan won’t pay the bill. If your cat needs an extraction because it fell off your dresser and chipped its tooth on the way down, then your accident-only plan would cover it.

Preventive care

Many pet insurance companies now offer preventive care plans to help you maintain your pet’s health.

Preventative care is an optional add-on, so it’s not available on its own. You must add it to your accident-only plan or your comprehensive pet insurance plan. Spot pet insurance has two preventative care package options:

Spot’s Gold Preventative Care plan reimburses you up to a certain amount for covered expenses. The Platinum Preventative Care plan reimburses you for more expenses and includes more benefits.

  • Optional add-on

Spot Gold Preventative Care policy (& limits)

  • Dental cleanings ($100)
  • Wellness exam fees ($50)
  • Rabies and/or Dog Lyme or Cat FIP Vaccine ($20)
  • Dog DHLPP or Cat FVRCP Vaccine ($20)
  • Deworming ($20)
  • Fecal testing ($20)
  • Dog Heartworm or Cat FELV Test ($20)
  • Total yearly benefits = $250
  • Optional add-on

  • Wellness exam fees ($50)

  • Dog heartworm or Cat FELV test ($25)
  • Rabies and/or dog lyme or cat FIP vaccine ($25)
  • Deworming ($25)
  • Fecal testing ($25)
  • Urinalysis ($25)
  • Blood Test ($25)
  • Total yearly benefits = $450

Spot Pet Insurance exclusions

Like other pet insurance companies, Spot doesn’t cover every possible service. Before you buy pet insurance, make sure you’re familiar with these exclusions.

What’s not covered

  • Pre-existing conditions
  • Pre-existing ligament and knee injuries
  • Preventative care
  • End-of-life expenses
  • Pet day care
  • Boarding
  • Elective procedures
  • Pregnancy
  • Experimental treatments
  • Prescription food
  • Grooming
  • Training

We’ll break down these exclusions and what they involve in more detail below.

Pre-existing conditions

Most pet insurance companies exclude illnesses and injuries that existed before your pet insurance went into effect. For example, if your dog develops a ligament condition three months before you purchase coverage from Spot Pet Insurance, your policy won’t cover any vet expenses associated with that condition.

Spot does make an exception for pre-existing conditions that are cured and don’t show any symptoms for at least 180 days before you buy pet insurance.

Preventative care

Unless you purchase the preventive care add-on, pet insurance from Spot doesn’t cover exam fees, pet dental cleanings and other routine services.

End-of-life expenses

If your pet dies due to a covered condition, your pet insurance plan may cover the cost of euthanasia and cremation/burial. However, pet insurance doesn’t pay for funeral expenses, urns, burial plots or memorial items.

Pet day care

Day care is a convenient option for working pet owners, but it’s not covered by most pet insurance companies, including Spot.

Boarding

If you have to leave your pet at a kennel while you travel, you’ll have to cover the cost on your own, as pet insurance doesn’t reimburse you for boarding expenses.

Elective procedures

Like human health insurance, pet insurance doesn’t cover anything that isn’t necessary to maintain your pet’s health and well-being. This includes orthodontic services, ear cropping, claw removal and dental crowns.

Pregnancy

Spot Pet Insurance doesn’t cover any pregnancy-related expenses, including vet costs associated with breeding or whelping.

Experimental treatments

Pet insurance doesn’t cover experimental treatments or pay for any costs associated with participating in clinical trials.

Prescription food

Spot may cover prescription food used to control the symptoms of a covered condition, but it doesn’t cover foods used to prevent medical problems or maintain a pet’s general health.

Grooming

Spot Pet Insurance doesn’t cover routine grooming. This includes things like bathing and nail trimming.

Training

Spot does not typically cover the cost of training your pet. However, the accident and illness plan does include training for certain behavioral issues like anxiety or aggression. To get reimbursed for this type of claim, you must meet with an approved animal behaviorist.

Spot Pet Insurance coverage options

When you sign up for coverage, you have several options to help you get the insurance you need at a price you can afford.

Let’s take a look at the Spot options for deductibles, reimbursement rates, and annual coverage limits.

Deductible options

Spot offers the following deductible options:

In the insurance industry, a deductible is the amount of money a policyholder must pay before coverage begins. For example, if you choose insurance with a $500 deductible, you must pay $500 out of your own pocket before the insurance company starts reimbursing your vet expenses.

Reimbursement rate options

Spot offers these reimbursement options with its pet insurance policies:

One way to save money on pet insurance is to choose a low reimbursement rate. This is the percentage of each covered vet bill you’ll receive from the insurance company. For example, if you have a $500 bill for a covered condition, you’d get back $350. If you’re on a budget, choosing a higher reimbursement rate can help you recoup more of your vet bills, but your monthly cost will also be higher.

Annual coverage limit options

Spot offers an unlimited plan, as well as pet insurance policies with annual limits ranging from $2,500 to $10,000.

This limit represents the maximum amount of reimbursement you’ll receive each year. For example, if you choose a $3,000 annual limit, you won’t be able to file a claim for any expenses exceeding $3,000.

Spot Pet Insurance waiting period and restrictions

Like other pet insurance companies, Spot does have some waiting periods and other restrictions you should know about.

Waiting period: In the insurance industry, a waiting period is the amount of time between when you sign up for coverage and when the policy goes into effect. The Spot Pet Insurance waiting period lasts 14 days for illnesses and accidents. The waiting period begins the first full day after you enroll.

Age restrictions: Spot has no upper age limit, making it one of the best pet insurance plans for senior dogs and cats. You can enroll your pet in an insurance plan whether it’s 3 years old or 17 years old. Note that your pet must be at least 8 weeks old to qualify for coverage.
