SUMMARY

Lemonade Pet Insurance is a great choice if you value a smooth digital experience. Claims, payments, and account details can be easily managed through their mobile app, which has excellent reviews and a 4.9 out of 5 star rating on the App Store.

The policies are affordable, customizable, and offer comprehensive coverage for accidents and illnesses. You can bundle your pet insurance policy with Lemonade’s other offerings like car, home, or renters insurance for even more savings.

Lemonade’s base plan doesn’t cover dental diseases and tooth extractions, which is something some competitors (like Pumpkin Pet Insurance or Fetch Pet Insurance) do include. If pet dental insurance is important to you, Lemonade does offer an add-on package that includes this coverage.

Our Lemonade Pet Insurance Review will help you compare the benefits they offer and decide if a Lemonade plan is right for you.

Lemonade Pet Insurance reviews from customers

Lemonade has generally positive reviews as a company. Overall, it’s rated 4.4 stars on Trustpilot, however this rating encompass reviews for all of Lemonade’s insurance services.

To help make sense of what customers think about the service, we researched and compiled the main points we saw customers repeating over and over in their reviews of Lemonade’s pet insurance coverage.

What Lemonade customers like:

  • Claims are reimbursed quickly, often in under 24 hours
  • How easy it is to file a claim
  • More affordable than other providers
  • Convenient app that’s easy to use

Chris M. said:

“Have been using Lemonade for pet insurance for over a year now and absolutely love it. Claims are very easy to file and I’ve also be reimbursed within 24 hours. Will definitely recommend to my family and friends.”

Jaime Winetrout said:

“This was my first time using any kind of pet insurance. It was so simple! I completed the information on the app, submitted Mika’s paperwork and had our claim approved in less than 5 hours! I don’t know if it’s always that easy, but I hope so. Thanks Lemonade!”

Tara said:

“The app is super clear and easy to navigate when submitting claims for your pup. The reimbursement turnaround time is less than 48 hours with a breakdown of what was covered and why based on your chosen plan(s). A lot of research went into choosing the right pet insurance for our large mastiff mixed breed, Bruce and I wouldn’t change a thing. 5 stars and 4 paws up!”

What Lemonade customers don’t like:

  • Claims are easily denied based on pre-existing conditions clause
  • You cannot submit claims via computer, only app
  • The lack of a human-touch and impersonal claims process

Tricia Uselton said:

“I purchased pet insurance, with a wellness plan earlier this year. Luckily, I have never had to file a claim on the accident/injury side; however, I have filed 2 claims under the wellness plan. Both claims were approved immediately and funds were sent to my bank immediately. One other point, that everyone should know is this - you can’t file a claim on a computer, it can only be done on your mobile device through the Lemonade app!”

Mike C. said:

“It’s been a smooth experience so far. There’s no human interaction. Saves money, but I miss a human touch. I’ve had 2 wellness exams/vaccines for my cats. I submitted paperwork and was reimbursed within a couple days. Everything has been straightforward. If you need pet insurance. I would recommend Lemonade.”

Olha said:

“Absolutely horrible experience. It is truly a scam not a pet insurance company. I had a top plan paying $90 for a year with included neutering procedure. They denied 99% of my visits under false pretenses of “preexisting condition” in a small 4 months puppy. I paid for neutering $500 and got $100 reimbursement. They denied paying surgery materials fees and anesthesia because it is preventative and not an accident.I would have been better off just saving $90 per month and paying out of pocket. Stay away from them!”

When looking at pet insurance we saw that people find Lemonade cheaper than the competition and love how easy it is to submit claims and get a quick reimbursement. By and large, we saw customers complaining about coverage being denied due to the pre-existing conditions clause in the policy.

When signing up for Lemonade, you’ll be asked to submit your pet’s medical history and records. Beware that these will be used to determine coverage inclusions or exclusions.

We also noted positive reviews that began as 1-star reviews that Lemonade responded to helping the reviewer solve their issue. The reviewer then redacted their review to make it 5-stars after receiving customer support.

Lemonade Pet Insurance plans and coverage

Lemonade offers a base plan that includes both accidents and illnesses, thus ensuring your pet has nose-to-tail coverage. This plan covers everything you would expect from a highly reviewed pet insurance company, like bloodwork, diagnostic testing, and emergency care. It also covers things some competitors don’t, like prescription medications, specialist care, and recurring conditions.

Lemonade accident and illness plan

  • Accidents like broken bones, swallowed objects or car accidents
  • Illnesses like upper respiratory infections, ear infections, vomiting or diarrhea
  • Hereditary and congenital conditions like hip dysplasia, hernias and eye disorders
  • Cancer treatment
  • Diabetes
  • Arthritis
  • Allergies
  • Treatment of parasites like fleas and heartworms
  • Blood tests and lab work
  • Diagnostic imaging like  X-rays, CT scans, MRIs and ultrasounds
  • Surgery and hospitalization, including IV fluids and medical supplies
  • Emergency care
  • Specialist care
  • Prescription medications

Once you purchase a base pet insurance policy from Lemonade, you can opt for add-ons to extend your pet insurance coverage and give you extra peace of mind. You can select a single add-on, mix and match, or select all five. Keep in mind that each comes at an additional cost to your accident and illness plan plan.

Lemonade Pet Insurance optional add-ons

  • Coverage for exam fees for accident and illness vet visits
  • Physical therapy, acupuncture and hydrotherapy coverage
  • Dental coverage for illnesses including tooth extractions, root canals, gingivitis and periodontal disease
  • Coverage for Vet-recommended therapy and treatment for behavioral conditions like separation anxiety or aggression
  • End of life services coverage like euthanasia, cremation and remembrance items or memorials.

Lemonade Pet Insurance wellness plans

Similar to the individual add-ons, Lemonade has three optional wellness plans that can cover expenses for routine care. These are only available when purchased in conjunction with the main accident and illness plan.

Lemonade’s three optional wellness plans are called:

  1. Preventive Care
  2. Preventive Care+
  3. Puppy & Kitten Preventative Care

While the Preventative Care and Preventative Care+ both offer coverage for routine care like vaccines and check-up appointments, the difference between these two plans mainly comes down to routine dental cleanings and flea, tick or heartworm medication coverage which is only available through the more expensive plan.

Lemonade tailors their preventative care plans to fit your pet based on their age, and therefore offers an option for kittens and puppies as well as adult cats and dogs.

Below you can see what each plan covers and the reimbursement limits based on a policy with 80% coinsurance.

Lemonade Pet Insurance exclusions

As with all other pet insurance providers, there are some things that are excluded from coverage.

What’s not covered by Lemonade Pet Insurance

  • Pre-existing conditions
  • Incidents that occur before the waiting period ends
  • Things not related to accidents and illnesses
  • Preventable conditions
  • Non-traditional therapies (CBD, acupuncture, etc)
  • Treatments that took place more than 180 days ago

With Lemonade, you have 180 days to file a claim after treatment to be eligible for coverage. Be sure to check your specific policy, however, because some states have different requirements. For example, you must file a claim within 90 days of treatment if you live in Texas.

Lemonade Pet Insurance will not cover any expenses arising from pre-existing conditions or health problems that your pet shows signs or symptoms of before the relevant waiting period expires.

If something happens to your pet before the waiting period ends, Lemonade will not reimburse you for the expenses. However, some illnesses that are considered curable may be covered after 12 months with no symptoms, but this is only available in some states.

Lemonade’s base plan doesn’t cover routine vet visits or other services that outside of illness or injury. For this, you may want to consider a wellness plan or an add-on. The same goes for non-traditional therapies like CBD or aromatherapy. However, if you purchase the physical therapy add-on, your pet may be eligible for some types of treatments.

Lemonade doesn’t cover bills related to preventable conditions. This includes conditions related to abuse, neglect and dog fighting.

How does Lemonade Pet Insurance compare to other providers?

Lemonade is often cheaper than other providers, but comes with strict policies for pre-existing conditions. They have, however, recently started covering recurring conditions. Lemonade also has an upper age limit.

That said, Lemonade has no waiting period for accidents. That’s the shortest waiting period in the industry. Although Lemonade is often cheaper than other providers, you may need to buy add-on coverage to be reimbursed for things like vet visits and blood tests. Other providers. like Paw Protect, offer this coverage as standard.

Lemonade Pet Insurance waiting period and age restrictions

Lemonade has waiting periods and other restrictions you need to know about before you buy a policy.

Lemonade Pet Insurance waiting periods

A pet insurance waiting period is the amount of time that must pass after you enroll before you can use your benefits. In most states, Lemonade has no waiting period for accidents, a 14-day waiting period for illnesses, and a 30-day waiting period for orthopedic conditions.

Lemonade Pet Insurance age restrictions

Although it’s important to insure your pet as early as possible, Lemonade doesn’t issue policies for pets under eight weeks old. There are also upper age limits to enroll, which change depending on your pet’s breed. Keep in mind, once your pet is signed up for coverage, Lemonade will never cancel your policy based on your pet’s age.

Lemonade Pet Insurance claims process

Lemonade customers rave about how quick and easy the claims process is. Claims are filed via app and customers are often reimbursed within 24-48 hours. However, the company notes that around 50% of Lemonade pet insurance claims are handled instantly.

Lemonade’s claims process is unique as they allow you to record yourself and explain what happened to your pet rather than simply relying on the documentation alone.

How the Lemonade claims process works:

  1. Download and open your Lemonade app and sign in.
  2. Record a short video or voice message to explain what happened during the vet visit.
  3. Upload your invoice/receipt and a detailed record from the visit.
  4. Submit your claim

Once Lemonade approves your claim, you’ll receive the money via wire transfer.

Make sure you file your claim within 180 days of each vet visit. If you have a policy in Texas, you only have 90 days to file.
