Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card: Low Fee, Simple Rewards

Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card review
What we think

The Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card is a solid option if you’re a semi-frequent traveler looking to earn miles on all purchases you make without forking over hundreds for an annual fee. It has a simple reward-earning structure and a low $95 annual fee, making it ideal for budget-conscious individuals not interested in managing bonus categories.

Venture Rewards boasts an exceptional new cardholder welcome bonus and valuable benefits like a fee credit for TSA PreCheck® or Global Entry, helping to offset the annual fee. However, this card lacks premium perks like complimentary airport lounge access and flexible travel credits, which may limit its value for frequent, luxury-minded travelers.

You may want to keep looking if you’re willing to manage bonus categories or a higher annual fee in exchange for more valuable perks. But if you want to keep things simple and affordable, the Venture Card may be a good option.

Keep reading as we outline all the benefits, potential drawbacks, fees, and more to help you decide if Capital One Venture would make a good addition to your wallet.

Note: For Capital One products listed on this page, some of the benefits are provided by Visa® or Mastercard® and may vary by product. See the respective Guide to Benefits for details, as terms and exclusions apply.

The basics

Is the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card worth it?

Potentially. The Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card may be worth it if you travel somewhat frequently and want to keep annual fees low and rewards simple. But another card may be better if you travel very frequently, want premium perks, prefer cash back, or want to maximize bonus categories.

Who is the Capital One Venture Rewards Card best for?

Capital One Venture Rewards is best for semi-frequent to frequent travelers who don’t want to pay the expensive annual fees of more premium travel credit cards. This card is also ideal for travelers who don’t want to track various spending categories when earning rewards. Additionally, this is a metal credit card so it feels extra fancy, so if that’s important to you it could be worth considering.

What we like

The welcome bonus

You can jumpstart your rewards with the Capital One Venture Rewards Card’s great welcome bonus. Spending $4,000 in the first three months after account opening is no small feat, but you can pocket 75,000 miles for meeting that requirement. As Capital One Miles are worth a penny each for travel, this bonus is worth $750. For a card with a low annual fee, that bonus is insanely good.

Low annual fee

To piggyback off the last benefit, the Venture Rewards Card only has a low $95 annual fee. Unlike many travel cards with steep costs, the Venture Card keeps things budget-friendly so you can reap its benefits without worrying about justifying or offsetting excessive fees.

Fee credit for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck®

Trusted traveler programs like TSA PreCheck® and Global Entry allow frequent travelers to speed up the long and tedious process associated with airport security. While these programs aren’t that expensive, you don’t need to worry about the cost at all with the Venture Rewards Card. With this card, you can access up to a $120 credit every four years to reimburse your Global Entry or TSA PreCheck application fee.

No foreign transaction fees

Capital One corners the market for not charging foreign transaction fees on their cards, and the Venture Card is no different. You can swipe this card freely overseas without worrying about incurring pesky costs on those purchases.

Hotel experience credit

When booking a hotel in the Lifestyle Collection through Capital One Travel, you’ll get a $50 experience credit. You can also benefit from complimentary room upgrades when available. While the Lifestyle Collection isn’t huge, this benefit could allow you to try some of these fancy hotels.

Transfer partners

Capital One has a great list of airline and hotel transfer partners. While you can redeem miles 1:1 for travel through Capital One Travel, transferring to select partners can be even more valuable, helping you to make the most of every dollar you spend.

These are Capital One’s transfer partners and the ratio your miles transfer at:

Airlines: Aeromexico (1:1), Air Canada (1:1), Air France-KLM (1:1), Avianca (1:1), British Airways (1:1), Cathay Pacific (1:1), Emirates (1:1), Etihad (1:1), EVA (2:1.5), Finnair (1:1), Qantas (1:1), Singapore Airlines (1:1), TAP Air Portugal (1:1), Turkish Airlines (1:1)

Hotels: Accor (2:1), Choice Privileges Hotels (1:1), Wyndham Rewards (1:1)

What we don’t like

Lower reward rate

The Venture Rewards Card’s reward rate isn’t quite as high as the rewards rate offered by many other travel credit cards. Each mile is worth no more than 1 cent unless you use a limited number of transfer partners to book your travel. This low reward rate makes it difficult to maximize your earnings. If earning potential is important to you, a card with a better rewards rate may be a better addition to your wallet.

High spending requirement for the welcome offer

Some users may also have trouble spending $4,000 within three months of opening an account, which is the minimum amount you must spend to qualify for the Venture Rewards’ sign-up bonus. If you don’t plan to use your credit card for everyday purchases, look for a card that gives you a sign-up bonus with a lower minimum spend.

Limited additional perks

Many credit cards come with valuable partner benefits like free DashPass subscriptions or free Instacart memberships. The Venture has a few perks like a Global Entry or TSA PreCheck fee credit but it’s lacking in benefits compared to some other travel cards.

The annual fee

While the Venture Rewards’ $95 annual fee is lower than some cards, it’s still almost $100 per year to remain a card member. If you don’t travel a lot, this fee could be difficult to justify. On the other hand, if you do travel frequently, this is a steal compared to higher-tier cards with annual fees costing $300 or more.

Rewards

Welcome bonus

New Venture Card cardholders can earn a one-time bonus of 75,000 miles when they spend $4,000 within three months of opening their account. This is worth $750 in travel!

Earning rewards

The Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card earns 5X miles on hotels, vacation rentals and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel and 2X miles on other purchases. Each mile is worth approximately 1 cent.

For example, assume you use Capital One Travel to book a $700 flight. When you get to your destination, you spend $400 on a rental car and $200 on souvenirs. You’d earn 1,800 miles on the flight/souvenirs ($900 in expenses times two miles per dollar) and 2,000 miles on the car rental ($400 in expenses times five miles per dollar).

Redeeming rewards

Capital One gives you seven ways to redeem your Venture Card miles:

  1. Transferring miles to a partner. Capital One allows you to transfer your miles to one of its transfer partners. Most partners have a 1:1 ratio, which means you’ll receive one mile or point for every mile you transfer.
  2. Redeeming miles as a statement credit. If you don’t want to move your miles to another loyalty program, you can redeem them for a statement credit. This is helpful if you want to use your miles to cover past travel expenses or if you want to use your miles without using Capital One Travel.
  3. Booking miles through the travel center. You can also redeem your Capital One Venture miles by using Capital One Travel to make your travel arrangements. For example, if you want to visit your family for the holidays, you may be able to use miles to pay for your flight and accommodations.
  4. Sharing them. If a friend or family member has the Capital One Venture, you can transfer your miles to their account
  5. Redeeming miles for events and experiences. You can use your miles to pay for concert tickets, sporting events, and other experiences. Note that you must use Capital One Entertainment to make your purchase.
  6. Buying gift cards. With the Capital One Venture, you can redeem your miles for gift cards from many major brands, including Best Buy and Barnes & Noble.
  7. Redeeming for cash. If you don’t have any upcoming travel plans and don’t want to share your miles, buy gift cards, or purchase premium experiences, you can redeem your Capital One Venture Rewards credit card miles for cash. Once you make the redemption, Capital One will send you a check or issue a statement credit.
