Newport Beach’s Wonderland Bakery lands in Las Vegas

A bakery straight out of Newport Beach just opened a storybook second version in Las Vegas.

Wonderland Bakery brings its sweet tooth to Dwntown Summerlin, the newest shopping center west of the Strip near Red Rock Resort. It’s anchored by stores Dillard’s and Macy’s.

Cakes, cookies and other artistic edibles play a starring role at this sweet shop from founder Allyson Ames, who bears a striking resemblance to the lead character in “Alice in Wonderland.”

She started baking at age 5 and worked her way up to become a favorite of the White House -- where she baked sugar cookies embossed with the Presidential Seal -- and comedian Whoopi Goldberg.

The first Wonderland Bakery opened in Newport Beach in 2005, and the brand already has seasonal locations throughout Southern California.

The Las Vegas location marks the start of a national expansion for the company that will include additional stores along with licensed lifestyle merchandise.

The bakery combines a little Willy Wonka, a dash of Candyland and, of course, pieces of the namesake “Alice in Wonderland” in a whimsical setting.

Custom cakes, desserts, chocolate fountains and other sugary goods are among the treats offered, but the fun really comes in the bakery’s workshop. It’s home to decorating parties with a sprinkle bar lining the wall and a variety of frostings and creative finishing touches to pick.

Custom baking kits, mixes, aprons and other items also are available.
