If Chanel created an airline, this is what it would look like
Wouldn't it be wonderful to fly Chanel Airlines where well-heeled passengers look like models and would ratchet up the glam factor? That's the fantasy that the Paris fashion house created last week for the rollout of its 2016 spring ready-to-wear collection during Paris Fashion Week.
Only in Paris could that most mundane of settings -- an airport terminal-- be transformed into a chic, fashionable wonder. It all unfolded at the 19th century Grand Palais museum on the Champs-Elysees, courtesy of Chanel.
"Guests handed over retro-style plane tickets before passing through security and into a dazzling all-white departure lounge, complete with roaming pilots, branded luggage trolleys and check-in desks," the New York Times wrote. If only!
Chanel Airlines' life-sized counters featured smartly dressed airline agents who were eager to serve model travelers, most trailing rolling luggage as they walked the runway.
Airport-style metal seats were part of the decor, and the single departure gate was No. 5 (for its signature scent), which had a faux cloud-filled backdrop.
Selfies were snapped, and designer Karl Lagerfeld emerged dressed as the flight captain. Of the terminal, Lagerfeld told Vogue magazine: "It's the idea of how it should look!"
The part that isn't a fantasy: Chanel sells hard-case carry-on wheelies and other bags you can take on your next flight.
And if you feel inspired by Chanel Airlines, you can always grab something from the spring collection, like the footwear Vogue describes as "Teva-type sandals with tweed straps and flashing runway-landing lights running around the soles."
