Deal: Kids go free on San Diego whale-watching tours aboard the America

Gray whales haven’t yet begun their migration along Southern California’s coast, but you’re likely to see humpback, fin and blue whales in the waters off San Diego this month. Three whale-watching trips offered aboard the America in October come with a discount too: a free child’s ticket with each adult fare.

The deal: The America is a pretty swell vessel. It is a replica of the original schooner that won the 100 Guinea Cup race around Britain’s Isle of Wight in 1851. The trophy was nicknamed for the ship and became forever known as the America’s Cup.

This replica was built in 1995 and is docked at the Maritime Museum of San Diego. Next Level Sailing operates the tours that cost $89 for adults and $44.50 for children 18 years old or younger. You have to call (800) 644-3454 to get the twofer tickets.

When: Whale-watching trips are set for Saturday, Oct. 24 and 31; free tickets for children are based on availability.

Details: In addition to the savings on the whale-watching tour, the month of October brings many kids-go-free deals in San Diego. The Maritime Museum offers free admission to two children 12 and younger with a paid adult ticket. Admission for kids usually costs $8.

And if you want to see gray whales, they are commonly sighted in Southern California waters from mid-December to mid-April.
