This takes true grit: Santa poses for a selfie amid the sands of Waikiki
Even Santa’s elves are getting into the selfie thing. There they are, larger than life, telling Santa and Mrs. Claus and their reindeer to smile for the camera.
It takes a lot of grit to do that -- not because it’s cheeky but because this is a sand sculpture at the Sheraton Waikiki.
The hotel’s main lobby is well-known for its sand sculptures, which change throughout the year. For the holidays, “Santa’s Serenade” features Santa Claus serenading the missus on a ukulele. It uses 8 tons of sand, is 7 feet wide and 7 feet tall.
Santa’s Selfie, in the hotel’s porte cochere, is even larger: 16 feet wide and 9 feet tall and made with 24 tons of sand.
It features Santa and Mrs. Claus surrounded by reindeer and Hawaiian-themed elves. One of them is holding a cellphone and taking a group photo.
Both works of art will remain on display into January.
Sandsational Sand Sculpting, a Melbourne, Fla., company, has been crafting the works of art for Sheraton Waikiki since 2007. Previous creations have included a group of fireknife dancers and voyagers in a Polynesian canoe.
