6 California hotels make Travel + Leisure’s ‘100 Best Hotels in the World’

Travel + Leisure’s “100 Best Hotels in the World” for 2016 starts with a newcomer in the No. 1 spot: the Indonesian surf retreat called Nihiwatu. 

The list released Wednesday is filled with 99 more luxury resorts near and far that will leave you drooling.

In the “near” department, six California hotels (none in Los Angeles, though) made the cut.

--No. 12: The Farmhouse Inn in Forestville has 25 rooms and suites and is located in California’s wine country, just south of Healdsburg.

--No. 21: Chateau du Sureau (which means “castle by the elderberries) is located in Oakhurst, near the south entrance to Yosemite National Park. The nine-acre resort with European decor opened in 1984.

--No. 37 (tie): Rosewood Sand Hill in Menlo Park sits on 16 acres in the Silicon Valley. The views from the 121 rooms and suites point toward the Santa Cruz Mountains and on-site gardens.

--No. 50: Rancho Valencia Resort & Spa in Rancho Santa Fe (north San Diego County) repeatedly turns up on top hotel lists. It has an AAA Five Diamond rating, a five-star rating from Forbes and was chosen as U.S. World & News Report’s best hotel in 2015.

--No. 53: The Brewery Gulch Inn in Mendocino is an arts-and-crafts-style resort built with “eco-salvaged redwood.” The views are the winners here; it sits on a bluff top overlooking the Mendocino coast.

--No. 96: Inn Above the Tide in Sausalito has just 31 rooms and overlooks San Francisco Bay. Every room looks toward the water, offering views of Alcatraz and Angel Island.

For those farther afield, you may not have to go too far for a luxe stay. Five of the 10 best hotels worldwide are in the U.S.

No. 6 The Lodge at Glendorn in Bradford, Pa.

No. 7 The Willcox in Aiken, S.C.

No. 8 Casa Gangotena in Quito, Ecuador

No. 9 Twin Farms in Barnard, Vt.

No. 10 The Singular Patagonia in Puerto Bories, Chile
