Legoland California adds Freedom Tower, 9/11 Memorial pools to its mini Manhattan
The tallest building in the Western Hemisphere has now become the tallest building at Legoland California Resort. The Carlsbad theme park unveiled its version of Manhattan’s One World Trade Center, also known as the Freedom Tower, on Independence Day.
To mark the reopening of its miniature version of New York City, the park held a ceremony that included music, as well as firefighters and police from Carlsbad, Calif., where the park is located, according to a news release.
The Lego version of the tower stands 26 feet tall (the real building is 1,776 feet tall) and was made from more than 250,000 Lego plastic bricks. It weighs more than 1,000 pounds.
New York in Miniland USA was closed for remodeling for three months before the reopening.
It has been updated with the tower as well as Lego replicas of the 9/11 Memorial’s reflecting pools, the site’s grove of memorial trees and the distinctive white World Trade Center Transportation Hub (the real one designed by Santiago Calatrava leads to subway lines, trains and ferries at the southern end of Manhattan).
The park also added a “tower viewer” that will give visitors a heightened view over Miniland USA.
