Love to fly first class? Now your cat or dog can come along in its own personal cabin rather than being placed under a seat as carry-on.

American Airlines has started offering what it's calling First Class Pet Cabins on its fleet of A321T aircraft. The cabins are available on selected flights between Los Angeles or San Francisco and New York City.

Here's how it works: First-class fliers will be able to put their small cat or dog in the ventilated compartment for takeoffs and landings. They are adjacent to the owner's seat, so animals may sit in your lap or at your feet during the flight.

It costs $125 in addition to a first-class ticket. To use the compartments, pet carriers can be no bigger than 19 by 13 by 9 inches.

Pets must be at least 8 weeks old too, and the airline also restricts certain breeds from being brought on board. Snub-nose dogs such as pit bulls and pugs aren't allowed, nor are Burmese and Himalayan cats.

Check out the rules on American's Traveling With Pets Web page.
