Giancarlo Stanton, a slugging outfielder from Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks, didn’t make the majors because of his defense, but on Thursday night he did make a diving catch that helped the Miami Marlins pull out a 4-3 victory over the Braves at Turner Field in Atlanta.

The Marlins took the lead in the top of the ninth inning on a run-scoring single by pinch-hitter Donovan Solano.

The Braves rallied in the bottom of the inning, though, and with a runner on first base and one out, Atlanta second baseman Dan Uggla drove a fly ball to deep right-center field.

Stanton broke toward the gap, covered more than 80 feet and on the run lunged to make a diving, backhanded catch to take away an extra-base hit and preserve the one-run lead.

The 6-foot-6, 240-pound outfielder was a 2007 second-round draft pick of the Marlins out of high school. Three years later, at the age of 20, he played 100 games for the Marlins and hasn’t slowed down since making his debut.

In 415 games over four seasons, he has 101 home runs, 254 runs batted in and an .891 on-base plus slugging percentage.
