Bryan brothers reach Wimbledon final, but have gold medal issues

Almost a year has passed since Bob and Mike Bryan won the men’s doubles at the 2012 London Games on the grounds of the All England Club.

Now the brothers from Camarillo are back, looking to make a different sort of history when they play for their third Wimbledon title on Saturday. But it seems they still have some unfinished Olympic business.

Over the last year, Bob got a little careless with his gold medal. It suffered a few dents and scratches. It even got dented out of round.

“I actually had the gold medal in my racquet bag for four months,” he told Live @ Wimbledon. “I was showing it to a million people.”

So, like any true brother would do, Bob pulled the switcheroo, grabbing Mike’s medal and sticking it in his display case. As if Mike wouldn’t notice.

“He’s got the immaculate one, with the pristine gold, and I got his beat up one,” Mike said. “I’m going to switch them back.”

Restitution will have to wait.

The Bryans survived a five-set semifinal match against Rohan Bopanna and Edouard Roger-Vasselin. They will face Ivan Dodig and Marcelo Melo on Saturday.
