U.S. Davis Cup team led by John Isner, Sam Querrey, Bryan brothers
NEW YORK — U.S. Davis Cup captain Jim Courier announced Tuesday that John Isner, who was upset in a dramatic five-set match by Philipp Kohlschreiber in the third round of the U.S. Open, and Californian Sam Querrey, who lost a fourth-round match to sixth-seeded Tomas Berdych, will play singles, and Bob and Mike Bryan will play doubles in an upcoming Davis Cup semifinal match between the U.S. and Spain.
Spain announced that its team will consist of David Ferrer, Nicolas Almagro, Marcel Granollers and Marc Lopez. Notably absent is Rafael Nadal, who missed the Olympics and the U.S. Open with a knee injury. The matches will be played Sept. 14-16 on clay in Gijon, Spain.
Courier said he had spoken to Isner after Isner’s disappointing loss.
“Good news for the U.S. Davis Cup was the bad news for John’s U.S. Open,” Courier said. “He overscheduled himself this summer and he’ll learn from that. He’s been incredible in Davis Cup and he’s incredibly excited about Gijon and he’ll get some rest for it now.”
Courier said what he took from his conversation from Isner was that Isner was disappointed to be so tired.
“When John’s fresh and focused, he’s beaten some substantial players this year,” Courier said. “He’s going to have to be fresh and focused to stand a chance against Ferrer and Almagro. Those guys are playing some incredible tennis.”
