Geno Smith played well for the New York Jets and came oh so ... whoa!

In a thriller of a debut, the Jets made a last-second comeback Sunday to beat Tampa Bay, 18-17, a spectacular start for the rookie quarterback Smith.

Nick Folk made a 48-yard field goal with two seconds remaining to give the underdog Jets a one-point lead and trigger euphoria at MetLife Stadium.

The Buccaneers took a 17-15 lead with 34 seconds left, putting the Jets in an almost hopeless situation. Smith moved his team near midfield, however, and on the fourth play of the possession, he scrambled 10 yards and made a beeline for the sideline.

But Tampa Bay’s Lavonte Davis gave the quarterback an extra shove as he had stepped out of bounds, and was flagged for a late hit. That put the Jets in field-goal range and they immediately took and made the kick.

So Smith emerged victorious after two other first-year starting quarterbacks, Pryor and rookie Manuel, nearly led their teams to upsets.

Pryor’s Raiders lost at Indianapolis, 21-17, and Manuel’s Bills lost at home to New England, 23-21.
