This time Matt Treanor delivers as Dodgers win fifth straight

Good thing the Dodgers keep calling up minor leaguers, because they are running out of candidates for their little “Hero of the Night” club.

On Monday they reached down for their backup catcher, Matt Treanor, who happily provided an early two-run homer to spark the Dodgers to a 6-1 victory over the Diamondbacks in Phoenix.

It was the Dodgers’ fifth consecutive victory and 10th in 12 games, and it pushed their record to 29-13, best in the major leagues.

And for those watching at home, the game even came free of commercials. Technical problems at Fox made it unable to air any commercials. PBS television broadcasts the Dodgers!

Chris Capuano, who had a personal four-game losing streak going against the Diamondbacks, pitched well for six innings to earn the victory and raise his record to 6-1.

Capuano gave up four hits and walked one, while striking out six and lowering his earned-run average to 2.25.

The Dodgers have now won six of eight games since Matt Kemp went on the disabled list, and don’t try to figure it out.

They keep winning by getting unexpected support from role players. So one day after rookie Scott Van Slyke hit his first home run to beat the Cardinals, Treanor gets a rare start and follows a Jerry Sands single in the second inning with his first home run of the season.

They picked up more traditional offense when Andre Ethier hit his ninth home run of the season in the seventh inning to extend his major league-best RBI total to 38.

The Dodgers put the game away with three runs in the eighth inning after recent call-up Ivan De Jesus Jr. singled and scored on Justin Sellers’ first major league triple. These triple-A Isotopes are killers.

Then James Loney, who did not start against left-hander Patrick Corbin (2-3) but entered the game in the seventh inning as a defensive switch, slugged a two-run homer against right-hander Brian Shaw.

The loss for the defending NL West Division champion Diamondbacks left them 10 1/2 games back of the Dodgers in the standings.
