Dee Gordon presses the action in Dodgers’ 5-4 win over Indians

The Dodgers defeated the Indians, 5-4, on Saturday when they scored three times in the seventh inning -- two on a triple by Luis Cruz-- and yet my favorite part of the game easily came in the first.

It included a leadoff bunt single, a steal of second base and an advance to third on the catcher’s throwing error, and run-scoring groundout to short.

Any guesses?

Yep, Dee Gordon struck again. Dropped a little bunt down the third-base line and then created a run almost entirely by himself. Speed may kill, but it definitely scores.

There is zero doubt about the damage Gordon can do, if he gets on base. Last year in 224 at-bats, Gordon hit .304, so encouragement reigned. Enough so, that he essentially became their starting shortstop when the Dodgers moved Rafael Furcal at the trading deadline.

After a modest start this spring, Gordon again is finding his rhythm. He is hitting .415 (17 for 41) and is eight for nine in steal attempts.

His speed failed him in the third inning when he singled to center and was thrown out trying to sneak it into a double. But there is no doubt Gordon’s speed adds an exciting element to the Dodgers’ attack that is badly needed.

On the mound, Chris Capuano gave up a pair of runs in his five innings on six hits and a pair of walks. He struck out two.

Mike MacDougal struggled in relief (two runs on two hits and two walks in two-thirds of an inning), but the rest of the bullpen (Todd Coffey, John Grabow, Kenley Jansen, Jamey Wright) threw blanks.

The Indians led 4-2 after scoring twice in the seventh inning against MacDougal, but the Dodgers came back to win it with three in the bottom of the inning on the hit by Cruz that left-fielder Felix Pie misplayed into a two-run triple. Cory Sullivan’s broken-bat single scored Cruz with the winning run.
