Mark Ellis to be placed on disabled list with leg injury
Second baseman Mark Ellis will be placed on the 15-day disabled list with an undisclosed leg injury, Manager Don Mattingly announced Saturday.
Ellis will be the fourth Dodgers starter on the disabled list, joining outfielders Matt Kemp and Juan Rivera as well as third baseman Juan Uribe.
Mattingly and trainer Sue Falsone offered no details about the injury, which was sustained the previous night when Ellis was upended at second base by a sliding Tyler Greene in the seventh inning.
No timetable has been set for Ellis’ return.
More details will be available later Saturday, Mattingly and Falsone said. Falsone said the Dodgers are still waiting for test results.
Ivan De Jesus Jr., who was recalled from triple-A Albuquerque, will take Ellis’ place on the active roster.
Signed to a two-year, $8.75-million contract over the winter, Ellis has been one of the Dodgers’ pleasant surprises this season. The 34-year-old was hitting .273 with two home runs and nine RBIs in 37 games. He has provided a stable presence in the middle of an infield that included inexperienced shortstop Dee Gordon.
“I think he’s a great player,” Mattingly said of Ellis. “He’s one of those guys, the more you see him, the better he is. It’s a tough guy to replace.”
