Clayton Kershaw allows 6 hits in Dodgers’ 6-0 win over Cardinals

The Dodgers added another name to the disabled list Saturday, Mark Ellis -- that makes eight -- and then went out and beat the world champion St. Louis Cardinals, 6-0, behind a Clayton Kershaw six-hitter before an announced crowd of 39,383.

That leaves the Dodgers 27-13, which naturally, is the best record in baseball.

This time they got another terrific outing from Clayton Kershaw -- which is to say, routine -- and manufactured enough offense for their eighth victory in their last 10 games.

The Cardinals are headed in the opposite direction. Despite leading the National League Central, they have lost seven of their last nine.

Before the game began, the Dodgers placed Mark Ellis on the disabled list with an unspecified leg injury. The leg was injured Friday when the Cardinals’ Tyler Greene slid hard into Ellis at second to break up a double play.

Saturday’s lineup featured only three players who started the season on opening day, but with Kershaw in firm control, they made it work.

It was the first shutout of the season for Kershaw and the fourth of his career. He wasn’t at his overpowering best, striking out a modest four, but he did not walk a batter and never was in serious trouble. Only two Cardinals made it to second.

The Dodgers broke open a scoreless game with a pair of runs off Jake Westbrook in the fourth. Bobby Abreu walked and Andre Ethier’s ground-rule double sent him to third.

Adam Kennedy’s hard bouncer got under the glove of first baseman Matt Carpenter for an error, and both runners scored. Carpenter had entered the game in the bottom of the third after Lance Berkman strained his right knee stretching for a throw at first.

The Dodgers broke the game open with four runs in the seventh after Justin Sellers, starting at shortstop for struggling Dee Gordon, hit a one-out home run. When Kershaw then doubled over Matt Holiday in left, the night ended for Westbrook (4-3).

Tony Gwynn Jr. greeted reliever Eduardo Sanchez with an RBI single. A wild pitch ended up scoring Gwynn, and Ethier singled in another run to increase his league-leading RBI total to 36.
