Kirk Gibson not a big fan of Kirk Gibson bobblehead
Throughout his playing career, Kirk Gibson shunned the spotlight. Twice, he even turned down invites to the All-Star Game.
So when the Dodgers decided to make Tuesday “Kirk Gibson Bobblehead Night,” Gibson wasn’t necessarily thrilled with the idea.
“I think it’s totally ridiculous,” said Gibson, who is in town as the manager of the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Dodgers face the Diamondbacks on Tuesday and Wednesday.
“It’s not my style, to be honest with you,” Gibson said. “Yeah, I do have a history here. It was a very cool thing that happened while I was here. I got to experience a world championship with some great teammates.”
Gibson is fondly remembered by Dodgers fans for hitting a walk-off home run as a pinch hitter while injured in Game 1 of the 1988 World Series. He rounded the bases with a limp, and was mobbed by his teammates when he reached home.
But after that, when the Dodger Stadium video board would show the highlight, Gibson would hide away in the dugout or anywhere else but the field.
Some things never change.
Asked Tuesday whether he would still hide away for the highlight reel and inevitable cheers that will follow, Gibson wouldn’t make any promises:
“Sometimes I have to go potty during the game,” Gibson joked.
That said, he did manage to raise his hat and accept applause from the crowd before the start of Tuesday’s game.
