Dodgers acquire Shane Victorino

The Dodgers have added outfielder Shane Victorino to a July trade haul that also includes Hanley Ramirez, Randy Choate and Brandon League.

Victorino was acquired from the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday morning in exchange for reliever Josh Lindblom and minor league pitcher Ethan Martin, according to a person familiar with the deal.

[Updated at 10:21 a.m.:The deal is now official. The Phillies will also receive a player to be named later or cash considerations.

General Manager Ned Colletti said this about Victorino in a news release issued by the Dodgers: “We’re excited to add an All-Star caliber player with postseason experience. He plays the game with passion, gives us a top of the order bat from both sides of the plate, can steal bases and is solid defensively in the outfield.”]

The Dodgers might not be finished, as they are said to still be wanting to add a starting pitcher before the 1 p.m. non-waiver trade deadline. Ryan Dempster of the Chicago Cubs remains a possibility.

In the 31-year-old Victorino, the Dodgers figure to have a leadoff hitter and everyday left fielder.

This will be a homecoming of sorts for Victorino, who was drafted by the Dodgers in 1999. Victorino was let go by them twice in the Rule 5 draft -- once in 2002 to the San Diego Padres and again in 2004 to the Phillies.

Victorino would come back to torment the Dodgers, as he was part of the 2008 and 2009 Phillies teams that beat them in the National League Championship Series. He was a source of controversy in the 2008 NLCS. Gesturing toward Hiroki Kuroda after Kuroda threw at him, Victorino sparked a bench-clearing incident.

Victorino has about $3 million remaining on his contract and will be a free agent at the end of the season.

Victorino is batting a modest .261 but has stolen 24 bases. He scored 95 runs last season, when he led the league with 16 triples.

In his second major league season, Lindblom turned into a late-inning option for the Dodgers this year. He has appeared in 48 games, posting a 3.02 earned-run average.

Martin, the Dodgers’ first-round draft pick in 2008, was said to have made significant strides this season at double-A Chattanooga, and some in the organization believed he was close to major-league-ready. But the Dodgers have five starting pitchers under contract next season -- Clayton Kershaw, Chad Billingsley, Ted Lilly, Chris Capuano and Aaron Harang -- and expect Rubby De La Rosa to return from elbow surgery.
