MLB to investigate Dodgers’ Yasiel Puig for role in reported fight
Yasiel Puig will be investigated by the commissioner’s office under Major League Baseball’s new domestic violence policy after an incident at a Miami bar Wednesday night.
The Dodgers’ right fielder was involved in a fight with a bouncer, according to Major Delrish Moss of the Miami Police Department.
Puig sustained injuries to his face, including a swollen left eye, Moss said, and the bouncer suffered a “busted lip” and other minor facial bruises.
The bouncer told police Puig had sucker-punched him. Puig said the bouncer was overly aggressive. Neither said they were interested in pressing charges, and Moss said the police considered the case closed.
The Dodgers declined to comment, as did Puig’s agent.
The news of MLB’s investigation came from a person familiar with the situation who spoke anonymously because the organization was still gathering facts pertaining to the incident. The domestic violence element stemmed from a TMZ report that bar employees got involved in the situation after Puig had a physical altercation with his sister.
However, Moss said, “No shoving was alleged. To the best of our knowledge, the only physical altercation was between the bouncer and Puig.”
Puig is the second player to be investigated under an MLB domestic violence policy implemented in August.
The league is currently looking into an alleged incident involving another former All-Star, Jose Reyes. The Colorado Rockies’ veteran shortstop was charged with domestic abuse in Hawaii this month. He has pleaded not guilty.
