L.A. to pay $5 million to family of woman killed by garbage truck
Los Angeles will spend $5 million to settle a lawsuit brought by the husband and daughter of a woman who was fatally struck by a city garbage truck.
In December, Flora Kohanbashiri was hit by the truck at an intersection in Beverly Grove. At the time of the incident, police told reporters that the garbage truck driver had been attempting to turn right onto Almont Drive from West 3rd Street, but backed up when he wasn’t able to make the sharp turn.
The lawsuit alleged that Kohanbashiri was standing on the sidewalk and knocked to the ground as the truck backed up, “causing her to sustain severe injuries which resulted in her untimely death.”
The Bureau of Sanitation did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the allegations and the settlement.
The Los Angeles City Council approved the $5-million settlement at its Wednesday meeting. Michael Geoola, one of the attorneys representing the Kohanbashiri family, declined to comment, saying that the rest of the settlement terms were confidential.
The city has faced other lawsuits over such accidents: Last year, the council approved a $10-million settlement with a Northridge woman who suffered severe injuries after being hit by a trash truck while crossing Reseda Boulevard.
