Winning $465,539 Powerball ticket sold in L.A. goes unclaimed
Lottery officials knew where and when he purchased the ticket and even had his photo, but the winner of a $465,539 Powerball prize missed the 180-day deadline on Monday after failing to claim his cash.
The ticket for the May 22 drawing was sold at Whitley Heights Market at 1900 North Highland Avenue in Los Angeles. The ticket matched five numbers: 31, 35, 41, 9 and 57, missing only the Powerball number, 26.
That was worth a $465,539 prize (before the lottery takes out about 25% for federal taxes).

Alex Traverso, a spokesman for the California Lottery, said that each year about $20 million to $25 million in prize money goes unclaimed and is added to the funding that the lottery provides for schools.
