One dead, five injured after tree falls on wedding party at Whittier park
A large eucalyptus tree fell on a wedding party at a Whittier park Saturday, killing one woman and injuring five other people, authorities said.
More than 100 firefighters responded to an emergency call about 5 p.m. at Penn Park, said Inspector Joey Marron of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Whittier police also rushed to the scene.
Several of the injured were transported to hospitals, Marron said. Among them was a 4-year-old girl in critical condition due to head trauma.
Witnesses told KTLA Channel 5 and ABC7 s that they saw people from the wedding party taking photos when the tree suddenly toppled. One person said the tree broke in half, landing on a number of the victims.
The tree “was very old,” Marron said, adding that officials have asked an arborist to help determine what caused it to fall.
