A ruptured fire hydrant triggered a mudslide Wednesday in a Hollywood Hills neighborhood and caused delays along a stretch of Sunset Boulevard.

The fire hydrant burst about 12:30 a.m. in the 8400 block of Grand View Drive, according to Kim Hughes, spokeswoman for the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power. It is unclear whether the fire hydrant was struck or malfunctioned.

Water and debris flowed downhill into streets and buried the driveways of some homes in thick mud.

DWP crews shut off water to the hydrant to stop the leak.

Meanwhile, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has advised drivers to avoid Sunset between Kings and Queens roads in West Hollywood due to heavy traffic and ongoing cleanup efforts.

A broken hydrant also sent a flood of water and mud onto Coldwater Canyon Boulevard in Studio City on Friday. A motorist had crashed into the hydrant.
