Police arrest two suspects in medical conference burglary ring
Authorities say they have broken up a burglary ring that targeted medical conferences at high-end Southern California hotels.
Mayra Alejandra Gutierrez-Leon, 27, and Eddwin Ricardo Bejaranobarrios, 26, both of Los Angeles, were arrested Tuesday on suspicion of stealing electronics from conference attendees at hotels in Orange and Los Angeles counties, the Newport Beach Police Department said.
When people at the conference were on a break, Gutierrez-Leon and Bejaranobarrios used a “distraction technique” to take bags that contained laptops, iPads and iPhones, said Jennifer Manzella of the Newport Beach Police Department in a prepared statement.
Police said the pair has been linked to at least 11 thefts: two each in Newport Beach, Anaheim, Garden Grove and Huntington Beach, and one in unincorporated Los Angeles County.
Estimated losses from the Newport Beach thefts are more than $23,000, police said.
