A man shot and killed by police in Long Beach early Tuesday morning was wanted for a carjacking in Los Angeles, authorities said.

Police said the man jumped out of a vehicle and ran off about 2:30 a.m. after officers pulled the car over. When police talked to the passengers who stayed behind, one of them told police the man was wanted for the carjacking and should be considered armed and dangerous, Long Beach police Deputy Chief Robert Luna said.

Officers requested air support and set up a perimeter. A police helicopter spotted the man on the roof of an apartment building at Nebraska Avenue and 4th Street about 4 a.m., Luna said.

Officers chased the man and shot and killed him, Luna said. The man’s body remained on the rooftop as authorities investigated the incident. It was not immediately clear whether the man had a gun or shot at police.

Not far from the brown building where the alleged shooting occurred, a longtime resident who gave only her first name, Wendy, said she was awakened by the sound of a helicopter. When she looked out her window, she saw several police officers speeding into the neighborhood.

She said she saw an officer putting up yellow tape at the corner of Almond Avenue and 4th Street, a half-block away from her building when she went back to sleep.

“I was lying down and then I heard ‘pop, pop, pop,’” she said.

Fourth Street between Orange and Walnut avenues and Nebraska Avenue between 4th and 7th streets remained closed while investigators combed the area for evidence, Luna said.
