1 found dead in Chinatown apartment blaze
A person was found dead Tuesday morning inside a fiery apartment in Chinatown, fire officials said.
The adult’s body was discovered in a residence within a 29-unit, garden-style apartment building in the 900 block of West College Street, said Brian Humphrey, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Fire Department. Another person was treated for smoke exposure at the scene.
About 82 firefighters tackled the blaze, which was reported just before 8 a.m. The fire was largely contained to the first-floor apartment.
The unit had a smoke alarm that had activated, he said, but the unit was not equipped with optional fire sprinklers.
