Woman driving with her 15-month-old son is shot several times
A woman driving down a street in Compton with her 15-month-old son in the back seat was shot several times Saturday night in an incident authorities believe is gang-related.
Police found the 26-year-old victim in her car in the 1000 block of Grandee Avenue about 10:20 p.m., said Lt. Nabeel Mitry of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. She was in the driver’s seat of the vehicle, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
She told police that she was driving after a car that looked like her boyfriend’s vehicle. But she realized that the car didn’t belong to her boyfriend when the vehicle stopped, and several men got out, Mitry said. She tried to make a u-turn and drive away, but there were men in the road.
She was shot several times but managed to drive away and call police, Mitry said.
She was transported to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center and is expected to survive, authorities said. Her son was unharmed.
Police canvassing the area found large-caliber bullet casings on the street, indicating that a large handgun was used. They also noted several bullet holes in the surrounding apartment buildings.
Based on preliminary information, Mitry said, authorities are investigating the shooting as gang-related. Police were unable to locate any witnesses on scene.
