Limited edition box set: Sqirl preserves x Laura Owens
Art bookstore Ooga Booga opened its second location earlier this month. Located in Boyle Heights, Ooga Booga 2 made its debut with an exhibit of paintings by post-conceptual artist Laura Owens, known for her large, airy, angst-free paintings.
A handmade Ooga Booga-published book by Owens, titled “Fruits and Nuts,” eschews her usual animal and plant subjects, featuring a silk-screened alphabet of illustrated fruit and nut letters on hand-glued pages made from California newspapers from the 1960s (including the San Francisco Chronicle, Berkeley Barb and the Los Angeles Times). It’s a play on California’s reputation as “the land of fruits and nuts.”
So what does all this have to do with jam? Sqirl proprietor Jessica Koslow has collaborated with Owens to release a limited-edition boxed set of preserves -- a jar each of her jam and nut butter. (Sqirl Cafe is a favorite restaurant of both Owens and Ooga Booga owner Wendy Yao.)
The box and the labels on the jars are painted by Owens, a neon-ish collection of avocado, date, banana, etc. Inside each box is a jar of Koslow’s wild blueberry tarragon jam and hazelnut butter. According to the boxed-set insert, “All of Koslow’s preserves are made from Californian fruits and nuts.” Grab your brioche.
$35 for the box set. Available while supplies last at Ooga Booga 2, 356 S. Mission Road, Los Angeles, www.oogabooga.com.
