Fight breast cancer, drink pink beer

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and Eagle Rock Brewery is helping to raise funds for the Keep a Breast Foundation with a special edition of its monthly Women’s Beer Forum on Oct. 16 that will feature a flight of seven pink beers.

The brewery’s co-founder, Ting Su, has been organizing the events since 2011, and each month dozens of craft-beer-loving women gather in the brewery to sample a themed flight of four beers and have “an open discussion about the characteristics, style, and background of each of the beers.”

Previous forums have covered wood-aged beers and food pairings for specific breweries’ offerings. For the special October edition of the event, Su says: “I figured the women’s forum can be used as a great platform to continue promoting women’s health. We’re going to be featuring a bunch of pink beers. Don’t worry, not gross ones. The lineup is actually going to be pretty amazing, particularly since we’ve got Craftsman, Ladyface, Pizza Port Solana Beach, the Bruery, Angel City and Goose Island participating at the event. And everyone’s bringing out some really fun stuff for it.“

The $22 admission includes the brews, a flight sheet and a commemorative Women’s Beer Forum glass. Food trucks will be on hand to help fuel the discussions, and though the event is just for the ladies, guys are welcome to hang out in the taproom and enjoy Eagle Rock’s eight taps (and the food trucks of course.)

If you can’t make it out for the event but still want to try some pink beers, Eagle Rock Brewery’s own Unity is now available in bottle shops; the ale with hibiscus and honey is pink and floral. Another pink-hued hibiscus beer is Hibiscus IPA -- a collaboration between Coronado Brewing Co. and Maui Brewing Co. that balances the fruity, floral flavor of the hibiscus with similarly fruity hops.
