5 new breweries that have opened since last L.A. Beer Week
The sixth annual L.A. Beer Week is here again, and the craft beer scene in Los Angeles has grown impressively in the last 12 months. New breweries have opened from the San Gabriel Valley to the South Bay and beyond.
After trying some new beers and checking out any of the dozens of L.A. Beer Week events, one of the best ways to celebrate the growth of craft beer in Los Angeles is to visit the tap room of your local brewery.
Here are five craft brewers that have opened around the region since the last Beer Week; pop in and raise a pint to craft beer’s takeover of Los Angeles!
MacLeod Ale Brewing - Van Nuys
The team at MacLeod has already built a buzz with their well-brewed and unique beers, and thirsty locals fill the tap room to get a pint of authentic British-style cask ales. Don’t miss the King’s Taxes Scotch ale or the Little Spree Yorkshire-style pale ale. Tasting room hours: Wednesday to Friday 5 to 10 p.m., Saturday and Sunday noon to 10 p.m.
14741 Calvert St., Van Nuys, (818) 631-1963, www.macleodale.com.
Highland Park Brewery - Highland Park
HPB opened in the back room of York Boulevard’s the Hermosillo just a couple of months ago, and already the brewery has developed a strong following with some on-point hoppy IPAs (Hello LA, Beer Spaceship), a fantastic coffee beer (Wake Up) and a delicate and approachable house beer (Refresh). Hours: Daily 5 p.m. to 2 a.m.
5125 York Blvd., Los Angeles, (323) 739-6459, www.facebook.com/HighlandParkBrewery.
King Harbor Brewing - Redondo Beach
King Harbor didn’t make a lot of noise when it joined the bustling South Bay beer scene, but it has been making some solid beers anchored with a finely-tuned single-hop pale ale called the Quest. The brew uses different hop varieties for each batch, and it should be easier to find it and other King Harbor beers on tap now that Artisan Ales is handling distribution for the new brewery. Tasting room hours: Wednesday and Thursday 4 to 8 p.m., Friday 4 to 9 p.m., Saturday noon to 9 p.m. and Sunday noon to 6 p.m.
2907 182nd St., Redondo Beach, (310) 542-8657, www.kingharborbrewing.com.
Progress Brewing - El Monte
At the end of 2013, Federal Brewing opened in El Monte, and it wasn’t long before the brewery was forced to change its name. The re-christened Progress Brewing makes well-crafted and approachable beers in the San Gabriel Valley, and it’s been embraced by the local community who had been starved for locally-brewed craft beer for too long. Tasting room hours: Monday 3 to 7 p.m., Thursday 3 to 8 p.m., Friday and Saturday 3 to 10 p.m. and Sunday noon to 8 p.m.
1822 Chico Ave., South El Monte, (626) 552-9603, www.progress-brewing.com.
Alosta Brewing - Covina
Another new brewery in the SGV, Alosta used Kickstarter to help fund its tap room, and the brewery now makes a wide range of styles from IPAs to Belgian-inspired brews to British-style ales. The word on the street is Alosta is a brewery worth a jaunt down the 210. Tasting room hours: Thursday and Friday 4 to 9 p.m., Saturday 2 to 9 p.m. and Sunday 1 to 6 p.m.
692 Arrow Grand Circle, Covina, (626) 470-7897, www.alostabrewing.com.
