New local brews just in time for L.A. Beer Week

Beer Week is almost here, but even if you don’t feel like celebrating at the various special events happening across Los Angeles, you can still toast to L.A.’s thriving craft beer scene with one of these new brews.

Unity from Eagle Rock Brewery and the L.A. Brewers Guild

The official beer of L.A. Beer week is a collaboration brewed at Eagle Rock Brewery by a team of brewers from across Los Angeles, and the “Los Angeles Pale Ale” is quaffable, spiked with grapefruit peels and pleasantly bitter. Bottles are being distributed to beer retailers around Los Angeles and should be available in time for the kickoff of the Beer Week festivities.

Golden Road Brewing cans Might As Well IPL

The latest installment in the brewery’s seasonal Custom IPA series, this “India pale lager” is a fruity hop-bomb with a crisp and clean finish that lets the layered hop aroma and flavors take the spotlight. The lager still has plenty of body (and the alcohol to back it up), and it’s now available in four-packs everywhere Golden Road Beers are sold.

Saint Archer + Girl Skateboards

While San Diego’s Saint Archer isn’t a local L.A. brewery, this new collaboration beer is too good to leave off this list. The hoppy pilsner is a perfect accompaniment to our current sweltering September; the canned brew is light and bursting with a zesty, citrusy hop flavor with a session-friendly alcohol content. Six packs of cans are available at retailers now, but they’re going fast.

El Segundo Brewing Co. unleashes a flood of new brews

The hop-focused brewers at El Segundo Brewing Co. have put together a hearty line-up of IPAs, double IPAs and even a triple IPA for September, and you’ll need to make a trip to the brewery’s tap room to taste them all. Bring a growler (or two) because these are some of the region’s best IPAs, and you’re going to want to take some home with you. The brewery’s flagship double IPA -- Two 5 Left -- was released this week (bottles of this pungent beer are also available), on the 21st the new Wallet Dropper DIPA (perhaps a reference to the classic A Tribe Called Quest song?) debuts on draft, and the following week sees the return of Powerplant Triple IPA. The latter beer was introduced last year, and it’s earned a reputation as a must-try for dedicated hop lovers in Los Angeles. Finally, Melon Collie -- a variant of the brewery’s White Dog IPA fermented with heirloom melons -- is back in the tasting room, and this year the brewery made 10 times as much of the popular brew as last year.
