'Dancing With the Stars: All-Stars' results recap: Country wrong

To be fair, Tom Bergeron hinted Tuesday night’s “elimination could be the most surprising of the season so far.” He and Brooke Burke-Charvet say that so often, though, it’s hard to know whether to take them seriously. But the couple ousted on the sixth week of “Dancing With the Stars: All-Stars” was not just a surprise, it was a horrible case of deja-vu, as the star ousted in her last season on Week 6 was, once again, ousted in Week 6.

That couple, of course, was Sabrina Bryan and Louis Van Amstel.

The other couple “in jeopardy” was the other perfect 30 scorers, Apolo Anton Ohno and Karina Smirnoff, though Tom quickly clarified that they weren’t necessarily in the bottom two.

The news hit fast and hard for erstwhile Cheetah girl Sabrina, who was just coming off a cathartic high after showing true vulnerability and emotion with her very personal rumba. Not to mention the high of being atop the leader board two weeks in a row. In the recap of Monday night’s show, we saw Louis Van Amstel was his usual Prince Charming and reminded Sabrina to use her emotions in the performance, and to “let your body express what you’ve been feeling right now.”

Perhaps viewers thought Sabrina’s high scores would carry her through to subsequent weeks. It’s a shock to see the scoreboard leaders exiting so early. Also because this premature exit was a carbon copy of what happened back in Season 5. The ballroom was quiet in its shock and Carrie Ann looked like she was doubled over in disappointment. “Week 6 sucks,” Tom said.

Still, Sabrina, obviously upset, took this all very graciously, saying she was grateful for this experience, and to the viewers who voted her on this season. “Last night was one of the best nights I’ve ever had,” she said. Louis shared the same sentiment. “Last night summed up how much I feel about Sabrina,” the pro said. “A dream come true.”

The encore dance was Apolo Anton Ohno and Karina Smirnoff’s perfect 30 Viennese waltz to Rascal Flatts’ “Skin,” which offered a sweet, tender, lilting start to the proceedings.

A pony-tailed Jason Mraz brought his guitar and fedora to the ballroom and performed a sweet, pared-down version of his No. 1 single “I Won’t Give Up” while Chelsie Hightower and Mark Ballas danced out a contemporary intimate love story on the floor. And the Macy’s Stars of Dance performance was an updated version of Marie Antoinette (even more than the Sofia Coppola version) crossed with Madonna and burlesque set to techno music and choreographed by RJ Durell and Nick Florez.

Next week’s fusion dances were picked. Each couple has to do two different dances to one piece of music. And couples got to pick the styles for their fellow couples. I’m a little disappointed there was no Vietnamese waltz in the bunch (maybe next season?), but here’s how it went down:

-- Kirstie and Maks picked the tango/cha cha for Melissa and Tony

-- Kelly and Val chose the Argentine Tango/samba for Gilles and Peta

-- Emmitt and Cheryl picked the tango/fox trot for Sabrina and Louis

-- Apolo and Karina chose the quickstep/samba for Kirstie and Maks

-- Melissa and Tony chose the tango/paso doble for Shawn and Derek

-- Shawn and Derek picked the rumba/samba for Emmitt and Cheryl

-- Sabrina and Louis chose the cha cha/fox trot for Kelly and Val

-- Gilles & Peta chose the cha cha/paso doble for Apolo and Karina.

The glitterverse welcomed back six-time Grammy winner Taylor Swift, who performed hit single “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” (like, ever) in front of a backdrop of hearts and arrows and accompanied by the Troupe. It ended, of course, in raucous applause. Me, I’m just glad she doesn’t do her look of surprise anymore. Though Tom kind of lost me for a second when he said this song reminded him of Sean Connery and how he refused to do Bond until “Never Say Never Again.” “Is this a Sean Connery never?” Tom asked. “This is like a never ever,” responded Taylor. And now that that’s over, let’s never ever speak of this ever again.
