Shia LaBeouf being treated for alcoholism but not in rehab

Shia LaBeouf is being treated for alcohol addiction in the wake of recent antics in New York that ultimately saw him arrested during a production of “Cabaret” and charged with disorderly conduct and criminal trespassing.

But that doesn’t mean he’s doing in-patient rehab.

“Contrary to previous erroneous reports, Shia LaBeouf has not checked into a rehabilitation facility but he is voluntarily receiving treatment for alcohol addiction,” the “Nyphomaniac” actor’s rep said Tuesday.

The 28-year-old, who arrived back in L.A. on Sunday afternoon, was photographed by X17 on Monday and Tuesday holding the “Big Book” of Alcoholics Anonymous. Rumors that he’d checked into a Hollywood rehab center were circulating on Monday.

The actor had a rough time of it in New York even before his Thursday-evening arrest and subsequent night in jail. Earlier that day, he was photographed chasing a homeless man around in the street, TMZ reported, with an eyewitness telling the website that LaBeouf seemed out of it and appeared to be trying to get a baseball cap from the man.

Police told The Times on Friday that LaBeouf had exhibited “violent behavior toward patrons” at Studio 54, where “Cabaret” was being performed. He stood up in the audience and yelled loudly at the actors on stage, according to the criminal complaint, in which an officer said the actor was screaming, spitting and asking, “Do you know who ... I am?”

LaBeouf is due back in court in New York on July 24 to face two counts of disorderly conduct and one count of harassment in the second degree.

Closer to home and also according to TMZ, the veteran of three “Transformers” films allegedly was banned from a Sherman Oaks restaurant back in May after a manager caught him urinating in the parking lot during the course of a lengthy visit.

“He understands that these recent actions are a symptom of a larger health problem and he has taken the first of many necessary steps towards recovery,” LaBeouf’s rep continued via email Tuesday, declining any further requests for comment.
