Lady Gaga has hip surgery; thanks fans for giving her ‘strength’

Lady Gaga has undergone hip surgery after a concert injury left her immobile last month and forced her to cancel the remainder of her “Born This Way Ball” tour.

In a note posted late Wednesday on her Little Monsters blog, the singer, whose real name is Stefani Germanotta, thanked fans and said that they had given her “a lot of strength” during her surgery.

“Everything happened so fast, but when it came time to face it I reflected on the many stories and experiences you’ve shared with me about your lives. Meeting you backstage, reading your letters, watching you communicate with fans from around the globe to form a community that supports one another -- You have completely blown my mind,” she wrote.

The 26-year-old was experiencing chronic pain that was the result of an unidentified show injury that she hid from her staff for a month. The injury caused a labral tear of the hip and prevented Gaga from walking, let alone performing in her theatrical shows.

Right before promoter Live Nation canceled more than 20 dates on her two-year world tour for “strict downtime to recover,” the singer took to Twitter earlier this month to apologize to fans. She took the time again Wednesday to thank them in her note.

“As they wheeled me into surgery today,” she wrote, “I thought about all of your pain and perseverance, your unique family situations, school environments, health issues, homelessness, identity struggles -- sometimes you are so brave that it terrifies me. I wonder how it’s even possible. So I thought to myself, I’m alive, I’m living my dream, and this is just a bump in the road. I’m grateful because this is temporary, and for some it is not. You have changed my life. I love you and am proud to be a part of your lives. If you can do it, I can do it too, and if we stick together we can get through anything.”

Mother Monster tweeted a photo of her wheelchair Saturday, with a simple caption that read “This is Emma.”
