Julianne Hough dons blackface for Halloween costume, apologizes
Julianne Hough put her worst face forward Friday night, knotting up her blond locks and donning blackface for her Halloween costume, the character Suzanne “Crazy Eyes” Warren from “Orange Is the New Black.”
On Saturday, she apologized.
The gaffe went down at the Casamigos Tequila Halloween party in Los Angeles, where Hough, 25, and pals went as orange-clad characters from the Netflix original series set in a women’s prison. In addition to the blackface, Hough darkened her hair and eyebrows, E! News noted, and sported a prison ID saying “Crazy Eyes.”
Brother Derek Hough posted an Instagram shot of his actress-singer-dancer sis with a half-dozen friends, Gossip Cop reported, with the caption, “Orange is the new Black !! Genius costumes. Love how much they commit and have fun with a show they love. #womanunit.”
“I am a huge fan of the show Orange is the New black, actress Uzo Aduba, and the character she has created,” Julianne Hough tweeted Saturday morning.
“It certainly was never my intention to be disrespectful or demeaning to anyone in any way. I realize my costume hurt and offended people and I truly apologize.”
