Chris Hemsworth shares super-skinny look from ‘In the Heart of the Sea’
Buff and bulky Chris Hemsworth underwent a major slim-down for his upcoming maritime epic, "In the Heart of the Sea."
The perennially ripped "Thor" and "Avengers" star shared a picture of himself on Sunday in character for the Ron Howard film, which hits theaters Dec. 11.
"Just tried a new diet/training program called 'Lost At Sea'. Wouldn't recommend it.. #IntheHeartoftheSea," the 32-year-old wrote, sharing a photo that featured his crackled and sunburned face, overgrown hair and beard and extremely gaunt torso.
The Aussie heartthrob's latest film centers on the 1820s sinking of the Essex whaling ship, an adaptation of Nathaniel Philbrick's eponymous book and true story that inspired Herman Melville's classic novel, "Moby-Dick."
When the final trailer for the long-coming film hit a few weeks ago, Hemsworth shared a snippet from it on his page that he captioned: "Excited for everyone to see this one, had an incredible experience on this film. @WBPictures #IntheHeartoftheSea." Though he didn't look nearly as gaunt or grizzled in the clip.
People's Sexiest Man Alive of 2014 reportedly ate only 500-700 calories a day for a few weeks, according to Entertainment Tonight.
"We have to shoot the really skinny stuff where we drop down to 500, 600, 700 calories a day, a good three or four weeks and it's going to be pretty uncomfortable, but we'll be together in our misery," Hemsworth told ET in July. "I spend more time thinking about food than anything else at the moment."
Now contrast that with the 20 pounds of lean muscle he had to pack on for the Marvel films...
Incidentally, the actor began shooting the film in September 2013, shortly after he slimmed down for Howard's 2013 Formula One drama "Rush."

In other Hemsworth news, "The Huntsman" and "Ghostbusters" reboot star will again host "Saturday Night Live on Dec. 12 with musical guest Chance the Rapper and landed the December cover of Vanity Fair. In the mag's gushy -- and we mean gushy -- feature story, he discusses almost walking away from acting when things fizzled after his small role in J.J. Abrams' 2009 "Star Trek" reboot and how his younger brother, Liam Hemsworth of "The Hunger Games" franchise," almost became Marvel's Norse god of thunder instead.
"There were eight months where just everything stopped. I got more and more anxious. I was about to pack it in. I had an audition before Christmas, and as I got on the plane, I thought ... I'm sick of caring,'" Hemsworth told the mag. "It didn't happen overnight for me. I bounced around Hollywood for days."
Then, another opening came.
"I had an audition with ['Thor' director] Ken [Branagh] that didn't go very well. I remember walking out thinking, 'Oh well, there goes that opportunity.' Then one day ['Avengers' writer-director] Joss [Whedon] and Drew [Goddard] were reading the trades, and on the front was the final four for Thor," he said. "And they pointed to Liam and said, 'Hey, is that your brother?' And I said, 'Yeah.' And they said, 'Why the hell aren't you in the mix?' And I said, 'I didn't get a callback.' And they were like, 'This is crazy.' And I was like, 'If one of us gets it, that's cool.' And they were like, 'No way. That should be you.' And when casting opened back up, Joss called Ken and said, 'Give Chris another shot.'"
As for his relationship with his famous brothers? He said they keep each other in check.
"Luke started acting. I followed his path, and then Liam followed mine. We're lucky. We're all there to help each other, give each other perspective, give each other the right amount of slapping as well," he said.
