‘Captain America: Civil War’ launches to $25 million at Thursday box office
“Captain America: Civil War,” the latest superhero adventure from Disney’s Marvel Studios, is well on its way to a powerful opening weekend at the box office.
The $250-million movie grossed $25 million in domestic ticket sales from Thursday night showings, slightly less than last year’s summer blockbuster “Avengers: Age of Ultron.”
“Civil War” may be titled like a Captain America movie, but the studio has “Avengers”-sized ambitions for the latest installment of the series. If “Civil War” grosses $200 million this weekend, as many analysts predict, it would be one of the four highest debuts ever.

Working in “Civil War’s” favor are stellar reviews, indicated by a 92% “fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes. “Age of Ultron” launched with Thursday pre-shows totaling $27.6 million, and scored an opening weekend of $191.3 million for the fourth-highest debut of all time.
“Civil War,” which centers on a conflict between Captain America and Iron Man, has already generated $291.2 million in ticket sales outside the U.S. and Canada.
