Willard Ford sells Chinatown’s Kim Sing Theatre for $3.3 million
Kim Sing Theatre, a live-work space and design hub in downtown L.A., has been sold by Willard Ford to Indra & Co., a group headed by Ash Pathi, for $3.3 million.
Ford, the son of actor Harrison Ford, had owned the Chinatown property in the 700 block of Figueroa since 2000, using the space for events and as a furniture and fashion showroom, as well as his private residence during that time.
Originally opened as a vaudeville house and later used as a movie theater, the 1926 building was renovated and modernized by Ford during his ownership. In a collaboration with XTen Architects, the interior was reimagined to create an internal courtyard, an audio-visual room, a large kitchen and retail space. The original neon marquee and bow truss ceilings were retained.
Four retails showrooms total about 9,000 square feet. Kim Sing Theatre often featured modern woodwork and furniture by up-and-coming designers — a fitting use considering Ford’s father worked as a carpenter before hitting it big as an actor.
A residential loft offers another 3,500 square feet of space across two floors. Within the loft there are three bedrooms and four bathrooms, including a master suite with its own entrance, office and kitchen.
Ford bought the property for $300,000, public records show. It had been offered for as much as $4.5 million.
David Kean of Douglas Elliman listed the property on behalf of Ford. Lindsay Rae Galbraith of Sotheby’s International Realty represented Indra & Co.
The Silver Lake-based company intends to lease the commercial spaces and open the residence to the public for events or short-term stays.
