Field of homes: A guide to where the U.S. presidential candidates own real estate

Since all aspects of the lives of the 2016 presidential candidates are under scrutiny, LoanDepot.com decided to take a look at their homes and mortgages as gathered from public records. The entire list, updates and loan details are available at the national nonbank lender’s blog.

We’ve parsed the data differently, looking at candidates known to own at least two properties.

For the Democratic Party are Hillary Rodham Clinton and her husband, Bill, who have a five-bedroom, four-bathroom Colonial in Chappaqua, N.Y. The home, built in 1889, has 5,232 square feet of living space and was purchased in 1999 for $1.7 million.

The couple also owns a four-bedroom, 2.5-bathroom residence of nearly the same size in the District of Columbia. They bought the stately red-brick home in 2001 for $2.85 million.

Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders and his wife, Jane O’Meara, have owned a four-bedroom, 2.5-bathroom home for the last six years in Burlington, where he served as mayor. The Colonial-style house, built in 1981, cost $405,000.

They also own an 892-square-foot townhouse in Washington, D.C., bought in 2007 for $488,999.

Former Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee and his wife, Stephanie, own a home in Warwick, R.I. The 3,024-square-foot, four-bedroom house had an assessed value of $727,600 last year. They also own a farm in Exeter, R.I.

Among the Republican candidates, South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham also maintains two residences. He bought a 1,901-square-foot single-family ranch home in Seneca, S.C., 22 years ago for $164,000 and has a 1,254-square-foot brick townhome in Washington, D.C. Purchased in 1997, the two-bedroom, two-bathroom townhome assessed this year at $560,910.

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee and his wife Janet’s three-story, custom-built home fronts the Gulf of Mexico in Blue Mountain Beach, Fla. Construction documents place the house size at 8,224 square feet of living space with an additional 2,969 square feet of porch and deck space. They also have a vacation home in North Little Rock’s Shady Valley.

Rick Perry and his wife Anita moved from the Texas governor’s mansion to a two-bedroom, two-bathroom townhome in Austin while their new home is being built in Round Top.

Former New York Gov. George Pataki and his wife Elizabeth own a 14-bedroom, 8.5-bathroom house in Garrison, N.Y., that they purchased in 1986 for $700,000.

The Patakis have also owned a dairy farm with a 10-bedroom house in Essex, N.Y., since 2003.

Donald Trump and his wife Melanie have homes in New York City and Palm Beach, Fla. Their penthouse in the Trump Tower along Manhattan’s 5th Avenue takes up three floors and is decorated in 24-karat gold and marble.

They also keep private quarters in Palm Beach at Mar-A-Lago Club, a 126-room, 110,000-square-foot estate he bought for $10 million in 1985.

Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum and his wife Karen own a 4,899-square-foot home in Great Falls, Va. It has four bedrooms and 4.5 bathrooms and was built in 1977. In February 2010, they took out a 30-year, adjustable-rate mortgage for $999,950 on the house.

The couple also own a 2,071-square-foot, three-bedroom Cape Cod-style home in Verona, Pa., that they bought in 1997 for $87,800.

Independent candidate Terry Jones, pastor of Dove World Outreach Center, and his wife, Sylvia R. Jones, own two homes on the same street in Gainesville, Fla. A 3,348-square-foot home built in 1981 was purchased in 2007 for $187,500. A two-bedroom, one-bathroom, 1,860-square-foot home built in 1979 cost them $95,000.
