Barry Bonds’ onetime Beverly Park estate hits the market at $36 million

This might be the real estate equivalent of stretching a double into an inside-the-park home run: A Beverly Park estate once home to Barry Bonds has listed for sale at $36 million, or about 64% more than what the former San Francisco Giants star sold it for last year — $22 million.

The Italian-inspired home behind gates was designed as a family home capable of hosting large-scale gatherings and built in 1998. Bonds bought the residence, which has a 17,100-square-foot villa, a 2,100-square-foot sports court and an olive grove, in 2002 for $8.7 million, public records show.

Marked by a circular motor court with a fountain, the two-story home is entered through elaborate curved double-doors wrapped in wrought iron.

Drawing from grand European style, two floors of living space feature such details as imported limestone columns, Italian travertine floors, silk carpets and crystal chandeliers. Hand-painted murals and coffered ceilings set off rooms as high as 30-feet.

Among living spaces is a walnut-paneled office, a 12-seat theater, a game room, a wine cellar and a gym. There are seven bedrooms and 13 bathrooms in all.

Outdoors, resort-style grounds center on a swimming pool with a raised spa and a pool house with a fireplace. A one-bedroom guesthouse, large expanses of grass and formal gardens complete the 1.85-acre setting.

The Agency’s Mauricio Umansky, who handled Bonds’ sale last year, is the listing agent.

Bonds, 51, played 22 seasons for the Pittsburgh Pirates and Giants, making 14 All-Star teams and earning seven Most Valuable Player awards. He is baseball’s single-season and all-time leading home run hitter with 73 (2001) and 762 homers, respectively.

For Bonds fans on a slightly smaller budget, another of the slugger’s former homes is currently on the market in Murrieta, Calif. Originally listed for sale at $4.499 million, the Mediterranean-style home in 1.2 acres currently asks $3.495 million.
