Aleppo’s sorrow: Scenes from Syria’s ruined city
As areas of the once rebel-held territory of east Aleppo are clawed back by government forces, many desperate residents remain in areas broken by five years of conflict. Others recently have come back to gather what remains of their disrupted lives.
They walk listlessly through the ancient souk, navigating maze-like walkways blocked by rubble, left behind by belligerents in their all-out fight for one of the world’s oldest continually inhabited cities.
Aleppo was once Syria’s thriving commercial center. This is Aleppo today.
