Countries around the globe light up monuments in solidarity with Paris
The Eiffel Tower will remain dark Saturday night in a gesture of mourning following the stream of violence that left at least 129 people dead and more than 350 wounded in Paris.
The company that operates the monument, which draws as many as 20,000 people per day, said it would remain closed "until further notice." The 116-year-old landmark is normally illuminated on the hour every night.
"Tonight, the Eiffel Tower is in mourning. It will stay dark in tribute to the victims of the attacks. #WeAreUnited," said a post on the city of Paris' Twitter feed.
Countries across the globe, meanwhile, lighted their monuments in the colors of the French flag in a display of solidarity:
Brandenburg Gate, Berlin
World Trade Center, New York
Christ the Redeemer, Rio de Janeiro
Wembley Stadium, London
Kuala Lumpur Tower, Malaysia.
Sydney Opera House, Australia.
Angel of Independence, Mexico City
