Special Report: Inside North Korea
The Times’ Jonathan Kaiman is in Pyongyang, North Korea, to report on the 105th birthday celebrations for the country’s founder and “supreme leader,” Kim Il Sung.
It’s an interesting time to be in one of the world’s most secretive countries. President Trump recently suggested that the U.S. could attack North Korea in retaliation for its repeated missile tests and budding nuclear program.

The North Koreans streamed in for hours — black-suited officials, women in colorful dresses, grim-faced military men — until they were a heaving mass in central Pyongyang, packed so tightly that the air above them shimmered from rising heat.

Not far from Pyongyang’s massive Communist monuments, government offices, and propaganda murals — most depicting the country’s two deceased leaders Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il — lies the Orphan Primary School, a pristine, state-run institution that provides some insight into how the country exists the way it is.
