The last external tank

The last flight-qualified space shuttle external fuel tank in existence is expected to arrive at Marina del Rey's Fisherman’s Village about May 18. The tank’s 16- to 18-hour journey along city streets to the California Science Center in Exposition Park will start May 21. The tank’s smaller size and svelte shape will make it easier to move than the space shuttle Endeavour in 2012.

The external tank’s route

Before May 21, crews will loosen utility lines, street lights and traffic lights so they can be removed just before the fuel tank passes. They will be reinstalled immediately afterward.

Turning corners

Here's a step-by-step look at how the tank will navigate the 90-degree turn at La Brea and Manchester avenues.
