Four hotels with s’mores-worthy treats worth traveling for
Go to any top hotel or restaurant around the country and you'd be hard-pressed not to find some kind of homage to s'mores on the menu -- and not just for kids either. The sturdy graham cracker, chocolate and marshmallow concotions have come a long way from their beginnings as a 1927 Girl Scouts trail recipe.
It's National S'mores Day on Monday (today). To celebrate, plan a trip to any of these five places that do the sticky treat proud.
1. Montana
The Resort at Paws Up in Greenough plans to make a 100-pound s'more Monday to mark s'mores day. Executive chef Ben Jones and pastry chef Melissa Root will do the honors -- making the gooey monster from scratch.
The resort offers stays in vacation homes or luxury tents on a 37,000-acre cattle ranch about 35 minutes north of Missoula. You get to decide how wild you want your vacation to be.
Guests may order a formal Chocolate Mousse S'more in the dining room or make their own table-side with gourmet fixings, skewers and a "small fire goblet."
Or you can ask the camping butler to make you a perfect one. But watch out; they sometimes add Reese's Peanut Butter Cups to the mix. Info: The Resort at Paws Up, (877) 580-6343
2. California
The Ritz-Carlton, Half Moon Bay this month will be serving up a liquidy S'moretini in its bars for the entire month of August.
It's got chocolate liquor and melted chocolate, crushed graham cracker and other spirits all topped off with a rum-soaked marshmallow. It costs $17.50.
You're also invited to toast your own s'mores using Ghirardelli milk chocolate at the hotel's fire pits. S'more desserts this month include House-Made Marshmallow With Chocolate Clouds and Honey Cinnamon Ice Cream too, or you can unwind with a S'more Pedicure at the spa.
For the truly indulgent, you can opt in for the S'more Romance package for $1,135 a night which includes a room with your own fire pit on the terrace, a s'mores kit, daily breakfast and a $200 spa credit. Info: Ritz-Carlton, Half Moon Bay, (650) 712-7000
3. Vermont
The Juniper Bar and Restaurant at Hotel Vermont in Burlington, Vt., makes a S'more Cocktail that takes the fire-side treat to new heights.
There's a lot going on in this drink, including a marshmallow effect made with Frangelico, lemon juice, an egg white and Mad River Distillers Vanilla Rum -- shaken vigorously.
Granola foam tops it all off, as a stand-in for that graham cracker flavor. It costs $12.
This is an inn dedicated to its community (it's in downtown Burlington) and to art. Check out the video that details where the hotel's rocks, stones and other artsy accents come from. Info: Hotel Vermont, (802) 651-0080
4. North Carolina
The Omni Grove Park Inn in Asheville sits in the Blue Ridge Mountains with a twist of its own on the s'more.
The inn's Pink Pig candy store will be serving a S'mores Parfait that's made with chocolate ganache, bourbon custard, graham cracker crumbs and topped with whipped cream.
The inn is a historic Arts and Crafts stone building more than a century old. Guests may stay in one of the old rooms at the main inn or a modern room. There's a spa, golf course and several bars and restaurants too. Info: Omni Grove Park Inn, (800) 438-5800
