Hawaii: ‘60s beach vibe inside and out at Honolulu’s Surfjack Hotel
Honolulu’s newest renovated hotel may be nearly a mile from Waikiki Beach, but it draws its inspiration from the beach culture of the 1960s.
The message painted at the bottom of the pool at the Surfjack Hotel & Swim Club says it all: “Wish you were here.” Formerly known as Hokele Suites, the hotel will reopen April 7 after a major renovation.
The site at 412 Lewers St. is a healthy walk from the resorts studding the beach. Aside from the location, the hotel hopes its design elements will set it apart from other lodgings.
Surfjack’s retro look includes vintage headboard upholstery by Tori Richard, a company known for its Hawaiian clothing; wallpaper handcrafted by Andrew Mau; and a fern gallery created by Paiko, a Honolulu botanical boutique.
Fixtures in the 112 rooms will recall the legendary surf culture of Oahu’s North Shore. Reed ceilings, batten walls and custom-tiled bathrooms round out the feel of the place.
Local chef Ed Kenney will oversee Mahina and Sun’s, the hotel’s on-site restaurant. Guests also can order up cocktails poolside.
The hotel’s introductory Sneak Peek offer is good April 7 to May 26. Rooms start at $169 a night for a 285-square-foot bungalow, and the property adds a $25 nightly resort fee.
