After last week’s fire, some rooms reopen, but 500 remain shut at Rio casino-resort in Las Vegas
Las Vegas’ temporary hotel room crunch eased Wednesday with the reopening of an additional 14 floors in the Rio hotel-casino resort’s Masquerade Tower following a fire and power outage last week.
Eighteen of Rio’s 41 floors have now reopened to guests after a small electrical fire Dec. 28 and a complete power loss the next morning.
The tower has 900 rooms, roughly 500 of which remain off-limits while building and fire inspectors conduct further tests. (The entire hotel has more than 2,500 rooms.) The rooftop VooDoo lounge and restaurant also remained closed Wednesday.
There’s no time estimate for reopening of additional floors at the hotel at 3700 W. Flamingo Road, a news release says.
It couldn’t have come at a busier time. Demand for rooms in Las Vegas always soars this time of year, including the first week in January, when the Consumer Electronics Show (Thursday through Sunday this year) draws an estimated 170,000 visitors.
The power outage was blamed on water from activated sprinklers seeping through the tower’s wiring. Six people suffered non-life-threatening injuries during the tower’s evacuation.
Caesars Entertainment’s other hotels along the Strip will be used to accommodate people who had been booked on the upper floors of the Masquerade Tower.
