On Kauai, they keep ‘em down on the farm by serving dinner there

Plenty of restaurants feature “farm to table” menus, but actually taking guests to the farm for dinner? That’s the twist one Kauai resort is offering.

Twice monthly, the Westin Princeville Ocean Resort Villas invites diners to learn more about the land along Kauai’s North Shore and the food it supplies, offering He Aina Ola dinner tours of the Waipa Foundation near the town of Hanalei.

“He aina ola” means “a nourishing feast” in Hawaiian. That, a news release says, is what the resort’s chefs serve participants after their walking tour of part of the 1,600-acre property.

Hawaiian cultural and food traditions are shared along the way.

The three-course meal incorporates fresh local ingredients, including those grown at Waipa’s farm. A recent menu included an appetizer of poached shrimp served in a fish stock containing green onions, taro and tomatoes, topped with a nasturtium.

The entrees feature the catch of the day, such as ono (tuna) with chard and taro, served in a chili lemongrass butter sauce.

The dinner tours are the second and fourth Mondays of each month, starting at 4:30 p.m. The $135 price includes the tour, dinner with wine pairings, tax and gratuity.

Reservations can be made by calling the resort at (808) 827-8808.

Visitors are also welcome at Waipa from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Tuesdays for its Pili Au food and farm tour. The experience includes a stroll through fragrant gardens followed by a cooking demonstration and samplings of several dishes.

The Tuesday program doesn’t involve the resort. Tickets cost $55 and bookings are available by calling (808) 826-9969.
